He was
born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain as Salvador
Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domenèch, 1st Marquis
of Púbol. He claimed that his ancestors were
descended from the Moors who occupied Spain for
nearly 800 years. His surrealistic paintings are
striking and bizarre, often attributed to the
influence of Renaissance masters. He used extensive
symbolism in his work. As an example, the hallmark
soft watches that first appear in The Persistance
of Memory suggest Einstein´s theory that time is
relative and not fixed. Dali was a versatile
artist, not limiting himself only to painting. Some
of his more popular artistic works are scupltures
and other objects.
